Alumni Day, Commemoration of Benefactors  and 2009 Reunion

Saturday 28 September

We are delighted to invite you to join us for our annual Alumni Day. The programme will include talks of general interest in the afternoon by two Selwyn Fellows, followed by the Commemoration of Benefactors service in Chapel and dinner in Hall.

The event is open to all alumni and guests, but in particular, we encourage those of you who matriculated in 2009 to join us to celebrate 10 years since you matriculated at Selwyn.

The full programme is as follows:

Lunch available to purchase in Hall, 12.00-1.30 pm
Refreshments and snacks available to purchase all day in Hall and the bar

12.00 talk by Professor Nick Butterfield: Life on Earth, Co-evolution of life and the planet
Darwin correctly predicted that the Earth is very old, and that it has 'swarmed with living creatures' through most of this time. What he didn't anticipate was the conspicuously non-gradualist fashion in which major evolutionary innovations emerged over the course of Earth history.
No charge

2.00pm talk by Professor Katharine Ellis: Slow opera: open-air spectacle in the French Midi around 1900
This lecture traces the early history of open-air opera and stage spectacle in the South of France, where it spawned a new genre and created a new kind of immersive theatrical experience for audiences.
No charge
