 Science: not just for scientists

by Katherine Mathieson (SE 1993)

We need science more than ever before to solve society’s most pressing challenges. Technologies like artificial intelligence and gene-editing offer enormous promise – but are seen by some as a threat. In this era of ‘fake news’ and ‘filter bubbles’, when a quarter of the population says “science is not for me”, how can we re-build the relationship between science and society?

 Katherine Mathieson

Katherine is Chief Executive of the British Science Association. The BSA, a registered charity, believes that science should be part of – rather than set apart from – society and culture, and is owned by the wider community.

The programmes encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with science, become ambassadors for science, and ultimately to be empowered to challenge and influence British science - whether they work in science or not.
